Infinite sum of integers

You have probably seen the following video that shows that:

1 +2 + 3 + 4 + ... = -1/12

Yes; the sum of all integers from 1 to infinity it is not only finite, it is also equal to a small value, which is negative!

If you haven't yet, do watch it. Then, for clarification, you can read the links below:

Falcon stage 1 landing is a bull's eye!

There are few interesting photos (and videos) at Space.com, showing Falcon 9 launch and landing on Dec 21st, 2015.  Make sure to take a look; they are beautiful.
I believe the one below shows a 'bull's eye', a bull's eye from hundreds of kilometers!

All I learned I learned from RadioLab: Speed

All I learned, I learned from RadioLab. OK, maybe not all, but many interesting facts about life, science, etc.

My favorite episode of all time is probably 'Speed'. All 'stories' in this episode are very interesting.

A Quasipolynomial Time Algorithm for Graph Isomorphism

You can read the details at Math ∩ Programming, but here is the short version...

The claim is that 'there is a deterministic algorithm for graph isomorphism and it runs in 2O(logc(n)) for some constant c. Quantities which are exponential in some power of a logarithm are called 'quasipolynomial', hence the title.

In the background section of Jeremy's article (linked above), there is an image to illustrate different ways to draw the same graph:

Some of the commenters noted that Gis not the same as others. Can you prove or disprove that this is the case?
Here is an editable graph to help you. Single click fixes a node, double click releases it. You can drag the nodes.

Particle Photon

Nope, not physics...

Particle is the (new) name of the company, Photon is one of their IoT devices.
Good documentation, nice interface, easy boot up. You have been informed; go get one!

Two features really impressed me:
  • documentation and IDE which made bootstrapping lightning fast, and
  • the fact that you are pushing code to a device behind your firewall

I2C Sensors from ControlEverything.com

A large set of sensor boards connected via I2C. From ControlEverything.com.

For example, a sender for Iso-Butane, LPG Propane and LNG natural gas; for $17 each.
Read details at here.

ADC121C 12-Bit ADC I²C Mini Module

Tesla Model S Assembly Line

Most of the technology you see in this video is not new. However, it is still fun to watch. Highlights for me are (i) the seat installing robot and (ii) robot to employee ratio.

This years TR35 has 3 roboticists... and 3 Turkish researchers

Travis Deyle mentions that 2015 TR25 list includes 3 roboticists (one being Dr. Deyle). While checking out the list, I realized that this list of 25 researchers/scientists includes three Turks, all female.

Congratulations Canan DaÄŸdeviren, Gözde DurmuÅŸ and Duygu Kayaman!

3d prototyper... err.. protopiper

Interesting Engineering, which is becoming one of my favorite pop engineering sites, mentions a 3-D protopiper [sic]. Looks like a toy, but I really like the fact that it enables you to test ideas 'in place' at actual scale.

snapVCC circuit for 9V battery

Electro-nerds, you know you want one of these, actually two, or a five-pack. Help this nice project out. From electronut.in.

Back to the... now?

The future is... now.

KIC 8462852

Just for future reference, we used to call it KIC 8462852, or TYC 3162-665-1, or  2MASS
J20061546+4427248 :)

Btw, arxiv paper that started it all is here.

A $3K 6-DOF manipulator? Sign me up.

Automata is designing a cheap manipulator.

The price will probably end up at least twice the quoted number, but still it is significantly better than what I have seen recently at RoboBusiness Expo where all 6- and 7-DOF manipulators in display were around $25-28K.

Revolutionary? Not so much...
Cool in a nerdy way? Definitely yes!

Your home knows too much about your life!

Article on IoT from Propublica: "How much does your smart home know about you? That was the question that Charles Givre, a data scientist at Booz Allen Hamilton, set out to answer in a recent experiment."

Reads like a horror story, but there is more ‘meat’ if you read past first few paragraphs.

The Martian

In case you haven't heard about it, The Martian is doing pretty well in the box office. I went to see it for the second time last Friday with my eldest (kinda forced her to see it :), and it was still engaging... even though I have seen it before and read the book earlier this year. The large auditorium was packed on its second week.

After watching the movie, do not forget to watch the additional videos on YouTube. There are quite a few snippets that are really fun to watch.

BTW, the book is still #1 (kindle version), #2 (audio version) and #4 (paperback) in Amazon's best sellers list in Hard Science Fiction. If you ask me, this book should be a required reading for all STEM students.

Everything I learned about elliptic curves, I learned from Jeremy Kun

Seriously, pretty good write up at http://jeremykun.com/2014/02/08/introducing-elliptic-curves.

It starts simple ('I aced my middle school algebra class'-simple btw) and before you know it, Abelian groups will hit you hard. Well worth the few weeks you will spend on it :)

Amazon launches AWS IoT

Now, it is getting intersting...

IFTTT Channels

Just looked at the available 'channels' on IFTTT and I am surprised with number of 'recipes' that are listed on the site. Also notable is the fact that 'Connected Home' section is the largest right now.

And, yes, there is an NPR channel. Wait! No Intuit channel?!

Weblog: Data-Driven Intelligence

Micheal Nielsen's 'Data-driven Intelligence' blog is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

AISE

Somebody got a new job as an AISE (artificial intelligence software engineer). Yep! That's the actual title :)

I moved from one group to another at the same company. From a software development position to one that is more research/tinkering oriented. Less REST API, more AI...

My current group/project(s) are all about innovation and advanced technology. The projects will require me to keep an eye on new technologies and research fields. Hence, this blog.. Hopefully, this will keep me on my toes, trying to follow recent developments in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Oh, it is going to be a-w-e-s-o-m-e!
